What is "a?"

How do you answer such a basic question, as what is a? Is it more correct to say I look through or out of the window? What is another word for memory value? Giving English lessons has provent to be much more difficult than previously expected. These Polacks, who converse about "interesting intergrals" over a beer, with a technical english-polish dictionary on-hand, have bigger english vocabularies than I! I take money from my clients, not being sure if I'm helping or hurting. One student has the.. what's the word.. daring+humilty (they need mathematical dictionaries) to say "dziękuję bardzo za pomocy z angielskim," thank you very much for your help with english. Now I know that "a" is both a determiner and an article. Memory value is sentimental value, but is it through, or out?
